It’s hard to imagine how a child can disappear from their apartment, but such a story actually happened nearly 26 years ago.

In the German city of Leipzig, a 22-year-old woman lived in an apartment with her parents and niece, Nadine Hertel. It’s uncertain where Nadine’s parents were at the time, with rumors suggesting they were serving a prison sentence. In early June 1995, guests gathered in the apartment to celebrate the hostess’s 22nd birthday. There were many attendees, including her parents and niece.

On that Friday evening, as the guests relaxed, Nadine, 8 years old, wandered from room to room seeking something to do. Later in the evening, she approached one of the guests, asking about her grandfather. The guest mentioned he was smoking on the balcony. This guest later claimed to have seen Nadine pass into the adjacent room, where there was an exit to the balcony. The child was never seen again.

The grandfather and Nadine’s uncle insisted that she never went to the balcony. Nadine was discovered missing after 9 PM, but until then, the guests and the birthday girl were unaware of her absence.
Nadine’s family reacted to the loss in a peculiar way. Typically, when children go missing, relatives do everything to attract attention, but Nadine’s family refused to meet with journalists. Despite the shock they may have been in, over the years, no parent spoke publicly about the missing girl.
The police arrived promptly after receiving a call from Nadine’s family. One guest recalled that the girl was expecting a relative, leading to a theory that she went to meet them. Her uncle mentioned arriving at the party around 8 PM but not seeing his niece.
Beside Nadine’s house, there was a noisy highway, a tram stop, and a nearby park where people strolled. However, no one recalled seeing an 8-year-old walking alone. The police suggested the possibility that Nadine went to the river, fell, and her body was carried away by the current. Divers checked the riverbed, but her body was never found.

Later, investigators casually mentioned finding a suspect, but it turned out the person wasn’t involved in Nadine’s disappearance. It’s possible the police invented the suspect to create the appearance of a successful operation. Nadine was never found, and it remains unclear whether she survived or not. It’s baffling how a small child could go missing in her own apartment, surrounded by adults.
