Conan O’Brien Pays Tribute to His ‘Heroic’ Mother and ‘Dreamer’ Father After They Died Within Days of Each Other

Conan O’Brien is contemplating the extraordinary life his parents had upon their death. The comedian’s father, Dr. Thomas O’Brien, died on Monday, December 9, as a result of deteriorating health, as reported by The Boston Globe.

Three days later, his mother, Ruth Reardon O’Brien, quietly died on December 12, as indicated in an obituary published by the Bell-O’Dea Funeral Home in Brookline, Massachusetts. Thomas was 95 years old, and Ruth was 92 years old. They had been married for an extraordinary 66 years. In the obituaries for his parents published in The Globe, Conan, 61, described his father as “the dreamer” and his mother as “the realist.”

He remembered that his father would exuberantly declare, “I’m departing for Peru with merely a change of clothes in my briefcase to attempt establishing a website for a hospital in the mountains.” Thomas was renowned for his groundbreaking research on antimicrobial drug resistance and was the first head of the infectious diseases section at present-day Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Conan sometimes joined his father on his global travels, and he nostalgically recalled a seventh-grade trip to South America that had a significant impact. “
My father was convinced that a week and a half of travel through diverse neighbourhoods and cities in South America would impart more knowledge than I could acquire in public school in Brookline,” Conan said. “I believe he instilled in me a passion for travel.” Ruth was as proficient in her domain, and Conan regarded her as “iconic.” He said that while nurturing him and his siblings, she concurrently progressed in her profession, finally attaining the position of the second female partner at the renowned legal firm Ropes & Grey. “My father was perpetually active, achieving remarkable progress in his career, while my mother was responsible for providing meals, preparing our clothing, and ensuring we attended all our medical and dental appointments,” Conan said.
He saw that his parents were very diligent and disciplined, and said, “I believe they perceived a unique bond in one another, akin to that of soulmates.” The pair, wed in 1958, had five children—Justin, Neal, Luke, Kate, and Jane—and nine grandkids, two of whom Conan shares with his spouse, Liza Powel O’Brien. A combined funeral for Thomas and Ruth was place on Wednesday, December 18, in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
