Elderly applicant storms the university for the 26th year: It is never late to fulfill the dreams

A 55-year-old Chinese resident has already failed 25 times in the general exam, according to the results of which China is assigned to universities. But he does not lose hope of becoming a student. He has business and enough money to do what he wants but he dreams to become a student.

“I just turned 55, but I’m still young,” Liang says. – And I still have no problems with the study of history and geography. If I can get into the university I like, I will finish this exam and study. Otherwise, I will continue to take exams until it becomes obvious that my dream cannot be realized.”

Liang Shi has been taking the gaokao general entrance exam since 1983 and has only missed it 14 times since, either due to job responsibilities or changes in admissions policy, such as when he couldn’t take it because he is unmarried and under 25 years old. His all-time best score was just over 400 out of a possible 750, which would have qualified him for a second level university but not his dream school, Sichuan University.

After failing 25 times in the science part of the gaokao exam required by science students, Liang switched to arts and humanities this year, hoping to finally get into Sichuan University. However, people are skeptical and tell him that his “bad memory” at 55 will prevent him from cramming textbooks.

“I just take people’s skepticism as motivation and use my test scores to prove them wrong,” Liang Shi said, adding that his strong desire to get into his dream university keeps him coming back for the exam year after year. Many consider the gaokao to be the most difficult
