Elderly asks his son to take him to a nursing home instead of staying to live with the family – Story of the day

Dario had to move in with his son Pedro after his house burned. He thought it was overwhelming him and considered that living in a nursing home would be the solution to the problem.

“I’m telling you, Dario. Your son will soon lose his mind and ask you to move. It’s better to be proactive and find something else on your own before that happens and the relationship suffers,” Darío heard María say once again. He had been talking about that since they started drinking tea on his son’s porch.

Darío Hernández’s house had burned two months ago while he was in the supermarket, and he suffered a heart attack when he got home. They took him to the hospital, and his son, Pedro, and his wife had insisted that he move in with them when he recovered. But they were a couple in their thirties with three small children, and now they had to take care of an older man in their house.

Darío was worried about being a burden for a while, but they insisted that they loved to have him around, and the grandchildren were always happy to hear his stories. But Pedro’s neighbor, María, who was about Dario’s age, told him otherwise.

“Do you think Pedro and his wife are too polite to tell me to move?” Dario asked while drinking tea.

Maria took a sip of her cup and nodded vehemently. “Of course! It happened to me, and I was only with my daughter for three weeks. She blamed me for everything that went wrong. He said that he made too much noise in the mornings and that he raised his electricity bill. My house was just being fumigated, but I swear I wanted to turn around,” he continued. “It’s been a while since we talked about that.”

Dario nodded, thinking that Maria might be right. Obviously, his son was much more educated because he didn’t have a single bad word to say about Dario.

He also noticed that Pedro and his wife, Sandra, came home later and later. He was happy to take care of the children for them, but maybe, he thought, they were not happy to see him in their house. He decided that maybe it was time to move.

That night, when he got home, the old man called his son and suggested that he transfer him to a nursing home, but Pedro said they should resume the conversation later. “Dad, now’s not the time for that. We’ll talk about it later.”

Several months passed and Dario was worried. Pedro and his wife seemed exhausted every time they got home, although they always smiled for him. He hadn’t talked about the nursing home again, but it was time to try again. I had enough savings to pay for a decent assisted living, so it wouldn’t be terrible.

He had even gone online to look for places, and there was one near his son’s house. He printed the information and was ready to show it to Pedro.

“Okay, Dad. We are going to visit him tomorrow,” Pedro agreed that night, and Darío felt relieved. María had again insisted on her long stay, and Darío was worried that this would ruin his bond with his son and the family.

So the next morning, Dario got into the co-pilot’s seat of Pedro’s car and they began to drive to the nursing home that he had suggested. For some reason, Pedro turned several times, and Darío frowned. “Are you sure this is the right way? It gives me the feeling that we are going in circles,” he told his son.

“Don’t worry, Dad. First we have to go through the market,” Pedro replied, with his hands moving the steering wheel and his eyes focused on the road.

Darío nodded and remained calm. He was so enthressed in his thoughts that he didn’t realize when Pedro stopped the car. “Oh, bring me a bag of chips, please,” Dario said absently.

“We’re not in the market, Dad. Look up,” Pedro said. Dario raised his head and looked at his son, who pointed to the passenger window. The old man turned and realized that they were on his old street, right in front of his house.

The last image I remembered of that place was of a lot of ash and pain. Dario had bought the house with his wife and there they had raised Pedro. The fact of seeing her destroyed after a huge short circuit in the kitchen had been too much for her old heart.

But the image I saw now was nothing like what I remembered. The house was back in shape. It was completely remodeled. Dario raised his eyebrows looking at his son. “I can’t believe you did this,” he whispered.

“Of course, I did. Well, we did it. Sandra worked to find the best budgets there was,” Pedro added with a huge smile on his face.

“It’s too much money, Pedro. Let me give it back to you,” Darío said while crying.

“Of course not. Did you think I was going to let my father live in a nursing home? I don’t know where you got that crazy idea from. Besides, you and mom raised me in that house. We can’t lose it at all, even if it has one of its own a few blocks aw blocks aw. I love this house, and this is more than you deserve for everything you did for me while I was growing up,” Pedro said.

Dario continued crying and his son gave him a big hug. They took a tour of the new house that Pedro and Sandra had also furnished, although it was now more modern.

Dario couldn’t believe that his son had done this, and now he understood why they always got home late. He also realized that he should not have listened to his nosy neighbor, Maria. It’s clear that she was wrong.

What can we learn from this story?

Each person’s life is different: María told Darío that her son would get tired of his presence in his house, judging by his own experience, but she was totally wrong. Because what happened to her would not necessarily happen to Darío.
