I got a bonus at work and my husband spent it on buying his mother a new phone behind my back

When Olivia received a $2,500 bonus, she thought her hard work had finally paid off. But her joy quickly turned to shock when she saw her mother-in-law flaunting a brand-new iPhone—an iPhone that her unemployed husband had secretly bought using her money! That’s when Olivia decided to teach him a lesson he would never forget…

The Beginning

When Aaron was courting me, he was attentive, hardworking, and kind. So, when he proposed, I felt like the luckiest woman in the world!

But the moment we returned from our honeymoon, things started changing.

It began with small things—skipping our evening plans to play video games, “forgetting” to do the dishes and leaving them piled up for days. Then, the morning coffee ritual vanished.

For a year before our wedding, Aaron would wake me up every morning with a cup of coffee, a hug, and a silly joke. It was one of those little gestures that made me feel truly loved.

But three years into our marriage, I couldn’t even remember the last time he had done something thoughtful just to make me smile.

Looking back, I should have confronted him sooner. But isn’t that always the case? You tell yourself things will get better, that it’s just a phase, that marriage is about supporting each other through rough patches.

So, I stayed quiet, kept hoping, and pretended everything was fine—until one Tuesday night when our lives took an unexpected turn.

The Turning Point

Aaron came home from work and collapsed onto our gray couch.

“Those guys at work don’t appreciate me at all. I nailed that analysis report, and no one even thanked me,” he grumbled, staring at the ceiling as if it held the answers to his problems.

I set aside my laptop and moved closer, ignoring the little voice in my head reminding me that we’d had this exact conversation at least twice a week for a month.

“I know it’s tough, baby, but things will get better.”

He shook his head. “Not if I don’t do something about it.”

And he did do something—he walked into his office the next day and told his boss to go to hell. Real maturity, right? He didn’t even have a backup plan.

So, I took over all the bills, telling myself it was temporary. We were a team, after all. That’s what I kept repeating to myself as I showed him where I kept our emergency cash in the bedroom drawer, just in case he needed something while job hunting.

“This is only for emergencies, okay?” I told him. “We have to be careful with money until you find another job. So, no unnecessary spending, Aaron.”

He nodded and assured me he understood.

The Breaking Point

Months passed, and Aaron’s job search mainly involved playing video games and watching YouTube tutorials on how to become a millionaire with cryptocurrency.

Meanwhile, I worked overtime to keep us afloat, coming home to a messy house and a husband more engaged with his gaming console than with me.

Then, one Friday afternoon, my boss called me into his office.

“Olivia, you’ve been an incredible asset to this company,” he said, his usual stern expression replaced with a genuine smile. “We want to reward your hard work.”

He slid a check across the desk, and my heart nearly stopped—$2,500!

I floated home that evening, imagining Aaron’s reaction. Maybe this would be his wake-up call—to see that hard work actually pays off. Maybe it would motivate him to take his job search seriously.

“Babe, you deserve it,” he said when I told him, wrapping me in a hug and kissing my forehead.

But something about his voice made my skin crawl. It was too sweet, like when a toddler acts suspiciously innocent.

I brushed the feeling aside, blaming my growing cynicism about our marriage.

Then came the dinner from hell with my mother-in-law, Ruth.

The Ultimate Betrayal

Ruth walked into our home as if she owned the place, immediately launching into her usual inspection routine—running her finger along the window ledges and making comments about imaginary dust.

“Olivia, you should really use less salt. It’s bad for Aaron’s heart,” she sniffed, pushing her plate away like I had poisoned it.

Never mind that Aaron had already added extra salt to his portion before even tasting it.

I was about to excuse myself to scream into a pillow when I noticed the brand-new iPhone 16 Pro Max sitting next to her on the table. It gleamed under our dining room lights.

My throat went dry. Oh wow. That’s a new phone, isn’t it? Who’s the generous soul?

Ruth beamed like she’d won the lottery. “Aaron got it for me! He knows how to treat his mother right.”

She turned to look at her son, who suddenly found his mashed potatoes very interesting.

A sinking feeling settled in my stomach. I already knew where Aaron had gotten the money for such an extravagant gift, but part of me refused to believe it without proof.

Muttering something about checking on dessert, I practically ran to our bedroom. The drawer where I kept our emergency cash was empty.

Three thousand dollars. Money I had saved for emergencies, for our future, for the life we were supposed to be building together. Gone. Every single penny.

I wanted to scream. The betrayal stung like a knife to the chest. But instead of exploding, I took a deep breath, fixed my makeup, and walked back to the dining room with a Mona Lisa smile.

If Aaron thought he could steal from me to spoil his witch of a mother and get away with it, he had another thing coming.

The Perfect Revenge

Two days later, I got my perfect opportunity.

Aaron had been hinting for weeks about wanting a high-end gaming laptop. That night, as we sat on the couch, he brought it up again.

“Babe, you know how you got that bonus? Well, I was thinking… maybe I could use a bit of it to get the new gaming laptop I need? My old one restarted five times today—I don’t think it’s going to last much longer.” He gave me those puppy-dog eyes that used to melt my heart.

I smiled sweetly, channeling my inner chess master. “You know what, baby? You’re right.”

I pulled out my phone and showed him a list of gaming laptops. “I already ordered the best one on the market for you.”

Then, I opened my email and showed him the order confirmation. His eyes lit up like Christmas morning.

“You’re amazing, babe! When’s it coming?”

“Oh, it arrived this morning.”

He blinked, confused but excited. “Where is it?”

I took a deep breath, savoring the moment like a fine wine.

“Oh, I sent it to your mom! Since you love spoiling her so much, I figured she could use it. Maybe she’ll start streaming Candy Crush. Who knows?”

The color drained from his face so fast I thought he might faint. He jumped up from the couch like it was on fire.

“You sent my gaming laptop to my mom?!”

I leaned back, crossing my arms. “Oh, so it’s a problem when I spend my money on your mom? But it wasn’t when you did it behind my back?”

His jaw dropped as the realization hit him.

“Okay, okay, I’m sorry!” he blurted, running his hands through his hair. “I’ll return the phone! I’ll get your money back!”

“Yes, you will. And you’ll deposit it into my new bank account. From now on, you have zero access to my money.”

I pulled out a printed list of job openings.

“I hope you enjoy job hunting, baby. Because your free ride? It’s over.”

Two weeks later, Aaron miraculously found a job. Turns out, motivation kicks in fast when your safety net disappears.

I don’t know what’s next for us—maybe counseling, if he’s willing to put in the effort. But one thing is crystal clear: Aaron will never touch my money again.

And if he tries? Well, Ruth might be the only woman left willing to take care of him. And something tells me she won’t like that one bit.
