I Had No Doubt That My Son Brought His New Girlfriend On Our Family Trip – Until I Accidentally Saw a Message on His Phone

I had planned our family vacation hoping it would be an opportunity to get closer to my husband and son. Instead, I became the victim of a betrayal that turned our perfect getaway into a nightmare. What happened there is something I’ll never forget.

Family vacations are meant to bring you closer, right? At least, that’s what I always believed.

But this time, what started as a family tradition turned into the worst moment of my life.

Being a working mother has never been easy, but I’ve always been proud of finding a balance between my career and family.

My job keeps me so busy that I often come home late, after dinner. Despite this, I always made sure my family had everything they needed.

My husband, Mark, also had a stable job, but things changed when he was laid off a few years ago. He did odd jobs here and there, contributing what he could, but most of the household expenses fell entirely on my shoulders.

Honestly, it didn’t bother me. That’s what you do for your family, right?

But lately, I began to notice cracks.

My work left me with less time to communicate with Mark because he was already asleep when I got home, making me feel like we were drifting apart.

However, I didn’t pay much attention to it. I thought we’d catch up during our annual vacation.

Our annual vacations were a tradition we’d kept over the years. No matter the financial struggles, we always made time for a few days away together.

This was something I cherished because I saw it as a chance to reconnect as a family and make memories that would last a lifetime.

This year, I wanted the trip to be even more special, especially since Mark had been struggling to find decent work. I thought the trip would lift his spirits.

“We need this,” I said to Mark one night after a particularly exhausting day at work. “A few days away from everything, just the three of us.”

“But I don’t have a job, and…”

“No buts,” I said. “I’ll take care of everything. And I’m sure you’ll find a job when you come back with a refreshed mind. Don’t worry, okay?”

“Alright,” he smiled. “Thanks for everything you do for us. I’m sure Eric will love the trip too.”

Our son, Eric, is 20 and in college. Like most young people his age, he’s absorbed in his world of parties, friends, and social media. But when I called him to tell him about our vacation plans, he seemed genuinely excited.

“Yes, mom, I’m in!” he exclaimed. “I can’t wait to spend time with you.”

It warmed my heart to hear that.

A day later, though, Eric called me back with a request. “Mom, would you mind if I brought my girlfriend?”

His girlfriend? That was news to me.

“Uh, I think so,” I hesitated. “What’s her name?”

“Jessica,” he said. “She’s great. You’ll love her.”

I wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea. We’d always had our vacations just the three of us, and adding a new person—someone I’d never met—seemed strange. But Eric was so excited, and I didn’t want to dampen his enthusiasm. He told me he’d been seeing her for three months.

“Alright,” I finally said. “She can join us.”

As the trip neared, I threw myself into planning. I wanted everything to be perfect.

Little did I know that these vacations wouldn’t be about strengthening our bond or relaxing. They would become one of my worst nightmares.

Jessica joined us at the airport, looking like she’d just stepped out of a magazine. Her stylish outfit, perfectly styled hair, and radiant smile immediately caught everyone’s attention, including Mark’s.

He seemed particularly charmed by her, pulling her suitcase and even complimenting her choice of shoes. I took this as politeness.

After all, she was Eric’s girlfriend. Why worry?

At first, Jessica seemed nice, but soon, small things began to seem odd.

On the first night’s dinner, I tried to bond with her.

“Jessica, have you ever seen Eric play basketball?” I asked.

Her eyes widened, and she hesitated before replying, “Basketball? We’ve never talked about that.”

My eyebrows shot up. Basketball had been Eric’s passion for years. His social media was filled with team photos and game highlights. How could his girlfriend of three months not know this?

I glanced at Eric, who was busy texting and didn’t notice.

The next day, Eric suggested we all try jet skiing. His face lit up as he described how fun it would be, but Jessica frowned.

“I’m not really into water sports,” she said.

Wait… didn’t Eric already know that? I thought. That’s strange.

At that moment, Eric’s excitement faded a little, but he quickly recovered and suggested we go sightseeing instead.

Later, as everyone was relaxing by the pool, I overheard Jessica ask Eric what his major was.

“Biology, right?” she laughed. “I can’t believe I always forget that!”

My heart skipped a beat. What was going on here?

This young woman claiming to be my son’s girlfriend had no idea about his love for basketball. She didn’t know his major. And she didn’t seem genuinely interested in learning. And Eric? He was constantly pampering her, bringing her drinks, carrying her bag, and even taking the lounge chair she didn’t like.

Calm down, Colleen, I told myself. Don’t overthink it. Relationships are complicated, and maybe Jessica just needed more time to get close to Eric.

Still, something didn’t feel right.

Midway through the trip, I was looking for sunscreen in Eric’s suitcase when I stumbled upon a small velvet box. Curious, I opened it and found a gorgeous diamond necklace.

It looked REALLY expensive, and I couldn’t believe my son had bought something so extravagant for his girlfriend.

How did Eric manage to afford this? I wondered.

Later that evening, I casually brought it up.

“Eric, I found the necklace in your suitcase,” I smiled. “It’s beautiful, and I’m sure Jessica will love it.”

He looked at me with wide eyes as though I’d said something I wasn’t supposed to.

“Yeah, I… I saved up for a while. I, uh, really liked it and thought I’d get it for her. After all, she deserves it.”

“That’s great!” I forced a smile. “I’m so proud of you!”

I wasn’t ready to believe my son, a college student on a tight budget, could afford something so extravagant. I decided not to push the issue, but my instincts told me there was more to this necklace than he was letting on.

Jessica’s indifference to Eric’s life, her lack of sincere interest, and now this mysterious necklace? It wasn’t right.

The last morning of our trip, the hotel was quiet. Mark was downstairs having breakfast, and Eric and Jessica were lounging by the pool.

I stayed in the suite, sipping coffee and trying not to overanalyze the situation.

That’s when Eric’s phone, left charging on the counter, pinged with a notification.

It was a message. I glanced at it distractedly, but my eyes widened when I read it.

It said: + $500 for our deal. Thanks for covering me with the necklace.

The sender? Mark. My husband.

My stomach dropped as my mind tried to connect the dots. I immediately grabbed Eric’s phone and entered the passcode (I knew it because I’d seen him unlock his phone once before).

I knew it wasn’t right to invade his privacy, but something told me I had to see more.

The message thread revealed a web of betrayal I could never have imagined.

Mark and Eric had been scheming for weeks, and Jessica wasn’t Eric’s girlfriend. She was Mark’s mistress.

Eric had pretended to date her so Mark could take her on the trip without raising my suspicions. The “deal” they had involved money Mark promised Eric in exchange for his silence. And the necklace? Mark had paid for it with my money.

I stared at the screen while dozens of questions swirled in my mind.

How could Mark do this to me? And Eric? Why did he agree to this? Did they think they could betray me like this?

I was furious. My heart was broken.

But I knew I couldn’t let this slide.

That evening, I invited everyone to dinner at the hotel restaurant. I dressed carefully, choosing a beautiful dress and pairing it with the diamond necklace my husband had bought for his mistress.

I wanted to look composed and strong, even though I felt like collapsing inside.

When I walked into the restaurant, they turned to look at me. Jessica’s eyes lit up, but her smile faded when she realized I was wearing her necklace.

“Mom, why are you wearing Jessica’s necklace?” Eric asked. “It’s her gift.”

“Oh, really?” I laughed. “That’s funny. Because your dad bought it with MY MONEY.”

Mark’s face turned pale.

“What are you talking about?” he stammered. “What do you mean…?”

“Stop pretending, Mark,” I rolled my eyes.

Then I turned to Jessica. “I don’t know what my husband told you, but he’s currently unemployed. He was laid off years ago, and since then, he’s struggled to find decent work.”

“But, I…”

“Shh!” I interrupted. “Let me finish. You see, I’ve been paying for everything since he lost his job. Everything, including this trip, the necklace, and even the money he promised Eric to play along with this charade.”

“Mom, I didn’t want to… I mean…” Eric started.

“I never thought my son could do something like this,” I glanced at Eric, tears streaming down my face. “I had no idea my own son was lying to me like this for money.”

That was the last thing I said to those three people. I stood up and returned to my room.

The next day, I flew home alone. Eric and Mark kept calling, but I refused to answer.

A week later, I filed for divorce. Jessica vanished when she realized Mark had no money, leaving him humiliated and alone.

As for Eric, we’re working to rebuild our relationship. He made a mistake, but he’s still my son, and I hope he never does something like this again. I guess he just wanted money and didn’t really care about what his father wanted him to do. I pray that he matures and understands that what Mark did that day was completely unacceptable.

I hope Eric never follows in his father’s footsteps.
