I rented a room to a stranger and discovered a creepy family secret – Story of the day

Every struggle I faced seemed endless until a stranger entered our lives, promising comfort and peace. But what happens when the line that separates trust from betrayal is blurred? In an instant, everything I thought I knew was shattered.

Life had been a constant struggle for me since my adoptive parents passed away. Raising my six-year-old daughter, Isla, in our small and modest house was a battle uphill. Every day seemed like an endless cycle of exhaustion. I woke up at 5 in the morning, with my body protesting as I crawled out of bed.

“It’s time to get up, honey,” I whispered to Isla, pushing a hair away from her cheek.

He stirred and his little eyes blinked with a sleepy smile. It was moments like that that made everything worth it, but they did not contribute to lightening the heavy burden he carried.

Mornings were always a whirlwind. I hurried to prepare breakfast, usually toast with a little jam or cereal on days when we arrived late.

“Mom, can I eat more jam today?”

“Just a little, okay? We have to save some for tomorrow,” I told him, kissing his forehead.

After leaving her at school, I hurried to get to my first job on time. The work was exhausting, and the pay was barely enough to cover the basic expenses.

The afternoons were no better. After picking up Isla, he prepared dinner, usually something simple like pasta or scrambled eggs.

After dinner, we played for a while. Isla laughed while I chased her through the living room, and the sound echoed on the walls of our small house. It was a brief respite from reality.

Despite having two jobs, money was always scarce. The bills accumulated like an endless mountain that I could never climb.

One night, I got another invoice with a huge amount.

How am I going to pay for this?

Margaret, my aunt-in-law and the only family I had left, often showed up without warning. He said he cared about me, but his visits looked more like inspections.

One day, he came in dancing a waltz, with his nose agitated, as if he was sniffing in search of signs of failure.

“Eloísa, you look exhausted,” he observed, and his eyes ran through the living room, stopping at the pile of dirty clothes that were in a corner.

“You know, if you had listened to me before, you wouldn’t be involved in this mess.”

I bit my tongue, forcing a polite smile.

“I do what I can, Margaret.”

“You have to think about Isla. A girl needs stability,” he lectured me. “I can keep the house, dear, but it needs to be in my name, you know?”

Of course I know. You want to keep my house. Mee it if I’m wrong.

But I preferred to skip the answer.

That night, I sat alone at the kitchen table, looking at the pile of bills. Margaret’s words echoed in my head, amplifying my doubts.

Maybe he’s right. Maybe I’m not enough.

I knew I needed help, but the idea of asking Margaret for it was unbearable.

After hours of internal conflict, I made a decision I never thought I would make. I decided to rent the extra bedroom of our house.

What other option did I have?

I put the ad on the Internet.

I hit “publish”, telling myself that it was only a temporary solution, a band-aid until I found a way out of this mess.

A few days later, I received a response to the ad from a woman named Delphine. His message was polite, almost formal, which relieved some of my initial concerns.

When we met in person, it was even more reassuring. About to turn sixty, with soft gray hair and friendly eyes, Delphine had a warm smile that made it difficult for me not to like her immediately.

“Thank you for taking me into account,” he told me. “I’m looking for a quiet place to stay. I could help at home if you need a couple more hands.”

There was something in her attitude that made me want to trust her. Even so, I doubted. Letting a stranger into our house was a big step.

“Why this place?” I asked, sounding more like a detective than a possible landlord.

“I need a change,” he admitted. “A quiet place to start from scratch.”

His sincerity surprised me. Besides, I didn’t have any other offer.

“Okay. You can move next week.”

Delphine moved shortly after and, at first, everything seemed perfect. She was more than a nice tenant. It was a comforting presence in our house.

“Do you want me to read Isla tonight?” he asked me one night while we were finishing dinner.

I hesitated for a moment, but Isla’s eyes lit up.

“Please, mom! Delphine makes the princess look so real.”

“Okay. Go ahead, Delphine.”

When Delphine began to read, her voice filled the room, giving life to the story. I looked at Isla, with a surprised face.

“You’re very good at this,” I admitted in a low voice.

Delphine smiled, not taking her eyes off the book.

“Thank you,” he replied. “I used to read to my niece all the time.”

Then, he followed me to the kitchen.

“Why don’t you wrap up Isla?” Delphine suggested, rolling up her shelves. “I can take care of the dishes tonight.”

“You don’t have to do it.”

He gave me a warm smile. “I insist. It’s the least I can do.”

As I put Isla into bed, I heard the jingle of the dishes in the kitchen. It was the first time in months that I didn’t feel completely alone in household responsibilities.

However, Margaret was not very amused by this arrangement.

“You can’t let anyone into your house, Eloise,” Margaret said, in a voice that distilled disdain.

“Trusting a stranger is a mistake. You never know people’s true intentions.”

I tried to ignore her comments, but Margaret always rushed to sow seeds of doubt and fear in my mind.

One night I got home earlier than usual, with the intention of surprising Isla with her favorite dessert. As I walked down the hall, I realized that the door to my bedroom was slightly ajar.

I opened it with a push and found Delphine rummaging through my drawers.

“What are you doing?” I said louder than I intended.

Delphine flinched, her face red with shame.

“I’m sorry,” he stammered. “I was looking for an aspirin. I wasn’t feeling well and I didn’t want to bother you.”

Her explanation seemed plausible, but seeing her in my personal space worried me.

I tried to push away the doubts, but they clung to me like a shadow, whispering in the back of my mind.

Weeks later, my work forced me to leave the city for a few days. Delphine had been kind and affectionate, and Isla adored her. So I decided to leave Isla in his care.

Margaret had initially promised to stay with Isla while I was away, but at the last moment she claimed that she had an urgent matter to attend to and could not stay.

But I never got to make my trip. While I was parking the car at the airport, my phone rang. It was Margaret.

“Eloise, you have to come back right now.”

“I’ve been home to see how Isla was, and something is not right.”

“Margaret, what you say doesn’t make sense. What’s going on?”

“I can’t explain everything to you over the phone,” he said. “Go home. Right now.”

Without thinking about it, I started the car and went back home at full speed. I imagined the worst.

When I finally arrived and broke through the door, Margaret was in the living room, hugging Isla against her chest. Delphine was nearby, clinging to a bag.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

Margaret gave Delphine a look of pure poison.

“Tell him,” he said. “Say what you were planning.”

“I was planning to take Isla for a night walk. That’s all,” Delphine said, looking at me with pleading eyes.

“Margaret broke in and started accusing me before I could explain it to her.”

“If that’s true, then open the bag,” Margaret said. “If you have nothing to hide, show us what’s inside.”

Slowly, I approached and opened the zipper of the bag. Inside I found Isla’s birth certificate and a box that contained my ring. The world was blurred around me.

“Why?” I exclaimed. “Why did you do this?”

Delphine’s face wrinkled.

“Eloise, I have no idea! I swear to you that…”

“I trusted you,” I whispered. “I let you into our house. But now…” I said, without looking at Delphine. “Get out.”

Delphine opened her mouth as if she was going to say something, but she didn’t say anything. Finally, he turned around and left.

Margaret hugged me tightly. But while he hugged me, a hollow void settled in my chest. I had kicked Delphine out, but there was something I didn’t like.

The next morning, I was in the kitchen when I heard some steps behind me.

“Mom, where’s Grandma Delphine?”

I swallowed saliva, trying to find the right words, but before I could answer, Isla continued.

“She told me the secret. She’s my real grandmother.”

“She… Did he tell you that?” I managed to whisper.

“He told me that you didn’t know and that he was trying to tell you. But Aunt Margaret was still mean to her.”

Isla added: “The aunt is not funny. Just take your things and hide them.”

“What do you mean, honey?” I asked carefully.

“I’ve seen Aunt Margaret. Yesterday he put your jewelry and your papers in Grandma Delphine’s bag.”

The pieces suddenly fit together, falling on me like a tsunami.

It can’t be! Margaret indicted Delphine! Why?

After hours of calls, I finally found Delphine on a bench in the park, looking more fragile than ever.

“I’m very sorry, honey. Years ago, I was in a difficult situation. I couldn’t keep you, so I gave you up for adoption.”

He put his hand in his bag and took out an old photograph. It was an image of a young woman with a baby in her arms, an identical copy of a photo she had in her home album.

“I was looking for this photo in your house,” Delphine explained to me. “To confirm what I already knew.”

Tears ran down my face when I finally understood.

“Margaret knew,” Delphine continued. “I told him, trying to get help. But all I wanted was to control you.”

I collapsed into Delphine’s arms, sobbing. She hugged me, without saying a word. Delphine handed me a small savings account.

“I’ve been saving,” he said softly.

“You don’t have to worry about debts. You can focus on your work and Isla.”

When I got home, I faced Margaret for the last time. He didn’t argue and just left.

Delphine entered the house, her eyes met mine with a silent force.

“Grandma!”, Isla screamed, running into her arms. Delphine took her in her arms.

At that moment I realized that we were free to be the family we had always been destined to be. Isla had the loving grandmother she deserved, and I finally had the support and love that I had been looking for all my life.
