I was the only one who went to my grandmother’s birthday lunch – After seeing her tears, I taught my family a lesson

When my grandmother asked us to come to her house to celebrate her birthday, I didn’t expect my family to do what they did! Grandma was hurt by their actions, and I wasn’t willing to let them get away with it. So, I came up with a plan that would put them in their place!

My story starts on a painful note but ends on a somewhat good one. It all centers around my grandma, the SWEETEST person ever. This incredible woman practically raised me and my siblings while our parents were busy getting divorced.

I mention this so the reader can understand just how special and beloved this precious woman is to us, or at least to me. Being the selfless person she is and not wanting to bother anyone, she surprised everyone before her upcoming 83rd birthday.

Instead of us organizing something special for her, my grandma planned an entire brunch at her house! She did it all despite her fragile health. On that day, she woke up at the crack of dawn to bake her own bread and pastries.

I learned about the event like everyone else, from the invitations my grandma had sent a week in advance. As if preparing her own food wasn’t enough, the woman had drawn and handwritten her invitations herself, EVEN THOUGH her hands trembled!

The effort and care she put into preparing her special day were more than enough motivation for me to attend. However, on her birthday, work delayed me, and I arrived 10 minutes late. Even though I wasn’t on time, I had already bought her a gift and showed up with it in hand. When I walked in, I found my grandma’s angel, her close friend, removing dishes from the table and pouring coffee down the sink.

Confused, I asked, “Grandma, did I get the time for your birthday party wrong? What happened? Where is everyone?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. I thought I had missed the party. But with a lump in her throat, my grandma admitted, “Sany, you’re not late, no one bothered to show up for my birthday. But it’s okay, honey. I know everyone is busy.”

My heart broke into a thousand pieces, and my blood boiled when I saw her eyes fill with tears. The poor woman could barely keep a trembling smile as she tried to pretend everything was fine.

“Busy? Mom’s retired, Tim has no job, and Sarah is ‘between jobs,’ whatever that means! They have no excuse,” I hugged my grandma. Everyone in my family had PROMISED to be there. But none of them had the decency to show up!

I promised to make it up to her for all of them. As I hugged her, a plan of revenge started to form in my mind. Grandma didn’t need to know, but for me, it was PERSONAL now! After spending some quality time with her, I went out to make a few calls.

I decided to teach my family a VERY WELL-DESERVED lesson. The first call I made was to my mom. “Hey, mom! Where are you? Grandma has fallen, and I found her alone at home.” My mom sounded concerned as she asked what had happened.

Continuing with the lie, I said, “I don’t know what happened. I got to her birthday party late and found her lying face down in the kitchen.” I told her grandma was now in the hospital being checked out.

“This could’ve been avoided if you had bothered to show up,” I blamed her. “Sorry, Sandra, I got caught up in something, honey. I’m going to see her now.”

“In what? You’re retired,” I snapped, unable to hide my anger. “Don’t talk to me like that!” she retorted before I could control my temper.

“I’m sorry, Mom, I’m really worried about Grandma,” I lied. “Another thing I need you to do is send some money to cover the huge hospital bills.” Feeling guilty, my mom agreed to send her part of the imaginary $2,000 bill.
After hanging up the phone, I went back in and spent some more time with Grandma until she asked me to let her take a nap. Seizing the opportunity, I called all the other family members who hadn’t bothered to show up.

I called my brother Tim. “Where are you? Why didn’t you come to Grandma’s brunch?”
“Something came up,” he mumbled.
“Like what? Another video game marathon?” I replied. “She’s in the hospital, Tim. Do you even care?”
He sounded breathless when he asked, “Is she going to be okay? What happened?”
I brushed him off, telling him I was too stressed to go into details. But I rubbed in the fact that what happened wouldn’t have occurred if someone had shown up to the lunch.

The premise of my plan was to make everyone feel guilty and hit them where it hurts the most: their wallets. I also told Tim the same story about needing to pay the hospital bills and how everyone was pitching in.
“I’ll get some money from a friend,” he promised. By this time, my mom had already sent some money. She also asked for details about Grandma’s health, as I hadn’t told her which hospital she was in.

I made similar calls to my sister and other relatives. Each one, feeling guilty, agreed to send money. In no time, I had gathered a considerable amount! I kept them on edge, claiming that Grandma was holding on. I told them visits would be allowed the next day.
I stayed overnight at Grandma’s house so she wouldn’t be alone. The next morning, I booked a trip for her and me to a beautiful destination she had always wanted to visit. I surprised her with the tickets.

“Grandma, pack your bags. We’re going on a trip,” I said with a big grin. Her eyes went wide. “What? How could you afford this?”
“Let’s just say I gathered a few IOUs,” I replied, winking at her.
We spent a week at a resort, enjoying the sun, the sea, and each other’s company. I made sure she had the birthday celebration she deserved. We took countless photos, capturing EVERY moment of joy.

Before we left, I reassured everyone by saying Grandma was going to be discharged. I told them her fall was stress-related. I assured them that I would take care of her and that no one needed to worry.
I posted the vacation pictures on social media, tagging all the family members. The captions read things like “Best birthday of my life!” and “Grandma’s special getaway!” My phone quickly started receiving calls and messages.

The first was from my mom. “But you said the money was for the hospital!” she screamed.
“But you promised you’d come to her lunch, and you didn’t,” I calmly replied, then hung up.
Next, my brother called. “What the hell, sis? You lied to us.”
“And you broke Grandma’s heart,” I responded before hanging up.

Each family member got the same response. I felt satisfaction seeing them fuming. They had let her down, and they needed to understand the consequences of their actions.
When we got back home, Grandma was radiant. She hadn’t stopped smiling since we left. “Thank you for this, darling. It’s been the best week of my life,” she said, hugging me tightly.

“You deserve it, Grandma. And don’t worry, next year will be even better.” From that day on, my family never missed another event. They showed up for every birthday, party, and Sunday dinner, but they continued to give me the cold shoulder for what I did.
Some even tried to make me feel guilty. But whenever they did, I’d ask, “Do you want me to go talk about this with Grandma?” That usually made them back off because they didn’t have the guts to face what they had done.

And every time I saw Grandma’s happy face, I knew it was all worth it! But a part of me did feel a little guilty for scamming everyone the way I did. So to all of you reading my story, do you think I went too far?
What would you have done in my place?
