My husband hired a “sweet” caregiver for his mom – She turned out to be his lover

Some betrayals occur right in front of you, hidden in plain sight. You don’t see them because you’re too busy believing in the person you love. Until, suddenly, the truth becomes impossible to ignore.

I’m Cassie, 35 years old, and I’ve been married to Ben, 38 years old. We don’t have children because I have faced some health problems that have made it difficult.

Despite this, we have built a life together that I am proud of. Ben works in the real estate sector, and I have a career in IT that keeps me busy but happy.

Our marriage was not perfect, but it seemed solid to me.

Ben had always been the affectionate one between us. When I was diagnosed with endometriosis three years ago, he was absent from work to take me to all the medical appointments. He brought me heating pads and my favorite ice cream without me asking for it.

On our fifth anniversary, he surprised me with a weekend trip to the cabin where we met, recreating our entire first date until the wine we drank.

That was the Ben I knew. Attentive, considerate and the kind of man who remembered the little things.

A few months ago, Ben’s mother, Sharon, suffered a mild stroke. He had always been kind to me, never the stereotype of mother-in-law-monster that we hear about.

After her recovery, we invited her to live with us so that we could help her with her care. I didn’t need constant supervision, but having someone close to us made all feel safer.

“I don’t want to be a burden,” Sharon had protested weakly when we proposed the transfer.

“Mom, you’ve taken care of me all my life,” Ben told her, squeezing her hand. “Let me return the favor.”

Combining work and care was more difficult than we expected. I worked at home two days a week and Ben adjusted his visits to our schedule, but there were still gaps in which Sharon was left alone.

After a particularly exhausting month, Ben suggested hiring a caregiver.

“Only for the hours in which we both work,” he explained one night during dinner. “Someone who keeps mom company, helps her with meals, makes sure she takes her medication.”

I exhaled relieved. “It seems perfect to me. Are we looking for agencies?”

Ben shook his head. “Actually, I think I’ve already found someone. A friend from work recommended it to me.”

“Oh, yes?” I raised an eyebrow. “How fast.”

“Her name is Lena. He is 28 years old and has already worked with several elderly clients.” His eyes lit up as he spoke. “It’s so sweet. As patient, as a daughter for her clients. Mom will love it.”

Something in his enthusiasm made me doubt, but I ignored it. Ben had always been passionate about helping others.

“Yesterday I met her for a coffee and interview her,” he continued. “It’s perfect, Cass. Absolutely perfect.”

“How much does it cost?” I asked, always practice.

Ben cleared his throat. “A thousand a week.”

I almost choked on the wine. “One thousand? For part-time care?”

“Quality care is worth what it costs,” he insisted. “Mom deserves the best. And Lena is the best.”

The next day, Ben brought home a folder with Lena’s “credentials”.

It was a list of references that I could not verify and certificates of programs that I had never heard of. Even so, I trusted my husband’s judgment. When I was decided about something, especially when it came to taking care of other people, I used to make the right decision.

“When can you start?” I asked, returning the folder.

“Monday,” Ben smiled. “You’re going to love it, Cass. And more importantly, mom too.”

I nodded, ignoring the strange sensation that invaded my stomach. If only I had paid attention to that feeling before.

Lena started working five days a week, arrived at nine and left at two.

From the beginning, I felt something strange. She was cute, with shiny brown hair and a smile that seemed permanently fixed on her face.

Sharon seemed uncomfortable around her, although she did not express any complaints. He caught her looking at Lena with a frown when he thought no one was looking at her.

“How is Lena doing?” I asked Sharon one afternoon while Lena was in the kitchen.

“She’s attentive,” Sharon replied carefully. “Very attentive to certain things.”

Before I could ask her what she meant, Lena came back with tea and Sharon remained silent.

What bothered me the most was how Lena behaved with Ben. He laughed too much at his jokes, he got too close to him when he spoke and touched his arm when he wanted to say something.

After two weeks, I realized that Lena lacked proper medical training.

I didn’t know how to properly measure Sharon’s blood pressure and confused the medication schedules.

She was more of a “helper” than a qualified caregiver.

“Did you check his credentials?” I asked Ben one night.

He got defensive instantly. “Of course I have. He does a great job. Mom loves her.”

“Actually, I’m not sure he does. And Lena doesn’t seem to have basic knowledge of care.”

“You’re exaggerating,” he said. “Not everyone has to do things your way, Cassie.”

I was surprised by his tone. This was not the Ben I knew.

One night, Sharon pushed me away while Ben was in the shower. He grabbed my wrist with surprising force.

“Cassie,” he said softly, “would you mind putting one of those little cameras? Sometimes I don’t feel safe when I’m alone. I’m afraid of fainting and that no one will find out.”

My heart shrank. “Did something happen, Sharon?”

He looked towards the corridor. “Eh… no… I just want you to help me and take care of me through those cameras. I’m asking you because I know Ben is not good at technology.”

The way he emphasized “take care of me” made my skin stand on end.

The next day, I installed three discreet cameras for nannies. One in the hallway, another in the living room and another near Sharon’s room. I didn’t tell Ben.

Sharon had asked me in confidence, and something told me that he would not approve of it.

A few days later, during the lunch break at work, I began to review the recordings. What I saw turned my stomach.

Lena wasn’t helping Sharon much. The cameras showed her spending most of the time on the phone or watching TV. He rushed with Sharon’s exercises, forgot about his medication and once even yelled at him for spilling tea.

But what broke my heart was seeing Ben.

It “appeared” during the day, when I was at work. They sat together on the couch, laughed and shared intimate caresses.

I was devastated, but not entirely surprised. A part of me knew something was wrong. I kept watching, waiting for an innocent explanation, but I only found more betrayal.

Then came the conversation that turned my grief into anger. Ben and Lena were sitting in the courtyard, believing that no one was hearing them.

“Soon the beach house will be yours, honey,” Ben said. “I’ll talk to mom about how much you’ve helped her and how much you deserve to be praised.”

Lena let out a chuckle. “And your wife? And her?”

Ben shrugged his shoulders. “Cassie has no idea. It’s always been like that.”

I didn’t face Ben immediately. Instead, I took the pictures to Sharon. We sat together in his room, watching the evidence of his son’s betrayal.

“I suspected something,” he whispered, with tears falling down his face. “But not this… not that I planned to take away my property.”

Together we devise a plan.

Sharon decided to celebrate her birthday at the beach house that Ben had promised Lena.

He invited everyone, including Lena, expressing how much he appreciated her and saying that Lena had almost become part of the family.

When everyone arrived, Sharon got up to make a toast.

“Dear Lena,” he said, “I want to thank you for taking care of me. As a sign of my gratitude, this beach house is yours.”

Lena’s eyes shone with emotion, and Ben smiled proudly.

Then Sharon’s tone changed. “Lena, that’s what you dreamed of hearing after having an affair with my son, right?”

The exclamations filled the room.

At that moment, I stepped forward and showed screenshots of the hidden cameras. There were images of Ben and Lena in compromising situations.

I even reproduced his conversation about the beach house for everyone to see.

Ben was speechless. Lena turned pale and fled the room crying.

“Mom, Cassie, I can explain,” Ben stamered.

“Save it,” I said. “I’ve already called a lawyer.”

The consequences were not long in coming. Ben moved that night. I filed for divorce. Lena was fired and Sharon updated her will, making sure that neither Ben nor Lena benefited from her inheritance.

Sharon and I have gotten closer throughout this ordeal. We have supported each other, finding strength in our unexpected bond.

“Do you know what I’ve learned?” Sharon told me recently as we were sitting on the porch of the beach house. “Trust your instincts. When something seems wrong to you, it usually is. But also, surround yourself with people brave enough to face the truth with you.”

I nodded, looking at the sunset.

Sometimes, the family you choose is stronger than the one you get. And sometimes, the most painful betrayals lead you to your truest allies.
