In the fifth month of pregnancy, 38-year-old Englishwoman Natalie Kinsella, after another ultrasound scan, discovered a serious pathology of the kidney in the fetus, which could lead to his death. The woman was offered an operation but was warned that the surgical intervention carries the risk of early labor and pregnancy fading.
It was also impossible to leave everything as it is – a cyst of this size could lead to the death of the baby. Together, she and her husband made the decision to have the operation.

At 27 weeks of pregnancy, doctors drained six full syringes of fluid from the cyst, and the fetus’s condition improved. But, unfortunately, a week later the cyst grew again and became even larger.
This time, the surgeons used an innovative method of treatment – using a thin needle inserted into the uterus, the fetus was installed in the kidney by a shunt, which helped to drain the accumulated fluid from it. The operation was successful.
Baby Finley was born weighing 2.1 kilograms and spent the first six weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit. Unfortunately, the examination showed that the left kidney, which had a cyst, was not functioning. It will have to be removed when the child grows up. But the prognosis for life remains good, and doctors expect that the second, healthy kidney will be able to work for two.
Finley is now 7 months old and feeling much better. The mother of four children, Natalie, does not regret for a second that she agreed to the operation.
