Son makes elderly wheelchair-bound mother cry at restaurant; apologizes when owner intervenes – Story of the Day

A young man took his disabled mother to a restaurant, but he ignored her until she spilled the glass of water. He yelled at her for it, making her cry, and the owner got furious and did something surprising.

“This is fine,” Emily said to her son, Dean, after the waitress took their order and walked away with the menus. She wanted to get her son’s attention because he was solely focused on his phone.

“Yeah, sure,” he murmured, his eyes glued to the screen. But then, he looked around. “I wish we weren’t so close to the bathroom, but with your wheelchair, we can’t sit anywhere else.”

Emily tried to ignore that dismissive comment and took a sip of water from her glass. “Still, it’s nice that we’re out together after so long. How’s university? The classes? Anything interesting happening on campus?” she asked, curious about her boy.

“Shut up and sit down,” the man said, surprising both Dean and Emily.

Dean hardly called her after going to university, and Emily knew he was finding his way and loved his independence. Growing up with a disabled mother couldn’t have been easy, even with the occasional caregivers she hired. She wanted him to enjoy his life away from those struggles. Still, it would have been nice to hear from him.

That’s why she invited him to a special meal, and she had to beg, beg, and beg for him to accept. She even bribed him with her late grandfather’s expensive watch. Maybe, after all, he came for that. But she was going to see the positive side.

“Oh, it’s fine, never mind,” she sighed, raising one side of her mouth as if nothing had happened.

Once again, Emily took her glass of water to sip, but she accidentally knocked it against the table, and the glass shattered on the floor. The crash was so loud that everyone in the restaurant looked over, and finally, Dean looked up from his phone.

“For God’s sake! I can’t even have a peaceful dinner without you making a scene and people staring at us. I didn’t want to come, but you kept pestering me. God, I can’t wait for this night to be over,” Dean said, louder than Emily had ever heard.

Her eyes widened in shock at his outburst, and she knew people were still staring. His voice echoed throughout the restaurant. Finally, her eyes filled with tears, and she started to sob quietly. “Okay, let’s go now,” she said between sobs.

“Great!” Dean said and grabbed his chair to stand up in a hurry.

“Wait a minute!” a man approached them. Emily looked up and saw the angry expression on his face. His eyebrows were furrowed, his lips twisted downward at the corners, and the wrinkles on his forehead stood out in the yellow glow of the overhead lighting.

“We’re not eating here. Cancel our meal,” Dean said, waving his hand dismissively. But the man shook his head.

“Shut up and sit down,” the man said, shocking both Dean and Emily. But the guy sat down slowly, as if he were afraid. “I heard your little outburst a second ago, young man, and I have to say, those were the most shocking words I’ve ever heard. I’ve been talking to my staff who are nearby, and I understand this is your mother. How could you speak to her like that?”

“No… I didn’t,” Dean stammered.

“You didn’t what? You know I would give anything to have my mother with me again. She taught me everything about life, love, hope, and dreams, and she raised me to be independent. Just like this beautiful woman here, she was also disabled. She had an illness that prevented her from having a normal job. And despite all that, she raised me. I never went hungry. I never lacked for anything. I suspect this woman has done the same for you,” the man continued. “Today, I own this restaurant and many others in Chicago. All thanks to her. And she never got to see my success.”

Dean lowered his gaze to his lap, embarrassed, while Emily stared at the restaurant owner, completely focused on his story.

“So, appreciate your mother. Talk to her. You have her right here! It’s the greatest privilege you’ll ever have! Be better! Otherwise, no matter what you do or how much money you make, you’ll never be known as a real man,” the man finished, breathing heavily.

Emily looked at her son and was surprised to see tears running down his cheeks. But before she could say anything, Dean looked up. “I’m so sorry, mom,” he said in a shaky voice. His face was wrinkled, and Emily wanted to hug him to take away his pain.

“Oh, dear,” she said, and he jumped up to hug her, apologizing again.

“Well, my work is done. Their meal will be out soon, and someone will quickly come to pick up that broken glass,” said the owner, who later introduced himself as Mr. Harris, giving a clap and walking away.

Dean sat back down, put away his phone, wiped his tears, and started talking. “Well, my classes are fine. A bit boring…”

Emily smiled, wiping her face. The rest of the dinner was fantastic, thanks to Mr. Harris’s scolding words. And Dean never mistreated his mother again.

What can we learn from this story?
• Respect your parents because you never know how much time you’ll have with them. The owner told Dean that he wished his mother could have seen his success, so he should make the most of the time he spends with Emily.
• Sometimes, it takes a stranger to wake you up and make you do better. Dean treated his mother horribly until the restaurant owner scolded him, and he realized the mistake of his actions.
