A man abandoned his young daughter with her mother to leave with his new wife, and when he returned ten years later, they do not receive him as he expected.
Doris Durán had raised her only child alone after her husband abandoned her when Nicolás was seven years old. It hadn’t been easy, but with two jobs he made sure that his child didn’t miss anything.

At that time, she was thirty years old. He never imagined that he would live the same thing again at 60 years old. Nor that Nicolás would abandon his daughter, Paula. He was puzzled that he could look so much like his father.

Nicolás had married a charming young woman, Sandra, but unfortunately she had died when Paula was just nine years old.
Doris thought that her son had felt very lonely, and perhaps that’s why he had fallen in love with Diana just a few weeks after his wife’s death. Six months later, they got married.
Little Paula, who had always been a happy and bustling girl, was now unusually calm and quiet. Doris preferred to attribute it to the loss of her mother. She believed that her son was a good man, and she was not prepared to face the truth.
The summer that Paula turned ten, Nicolás asked Doris if she could take care of the girl for three weeks while he and Diana went on vacation alone.
“All couples need time alone, mom,” her son told her. “And Paula has become difficult lately… He doesn’t get along with Diana.”
Doris listened to him surprised. “It’s okay, Nico,” he said. “Maybe a break could be good for the three of us. But if you allow me… I think Diana knew what she was getting into. I knew you had a grieving daughter.”
“An adult woman should be able to deal with the pain of a little girl who is still trying to accept her mother’s death and her father’s quick remarriage,” he said.

The blood rose to Nicolás’ face, and he pursed his lips in a gesture that Doris knew well. “I should have known that you would side with Paula!” He shouted. “Diana loves me, she makes me happy and that’s all that matters to me.”
“Well, SOMEONE has to be on Paula’s side and I’m surprised that it’s not her father,” Doris replied, hurt. “Your daughter’s happiness should be a priority for YOU!”
Nicolás left angry, but when he returned a week later with Paula and her suitcase, he seemed as happy as ever. He gave a loving goodbye kiss to his daughter and a hug to Doris.
“I’ll be back on August 27, mom,” he said and left with a big smile on his face.
Doris and Paula would not see him again for more than a decade. August 27 passed and Nicolás did not show up. Doris called him, and he was surprised to discover that his number had been disconnected.
Nicolás had not called his daughter since his departure, but had occasionally responded to her text messages until the day he had to return for her. Doris discovered that their house had been sold. He had left with Diana.
He had abandoned his daughter with her mother without saying a word or worrying about her well-being. Doris sat down with Paula and told her:
“Listen, we’ll manage, you and me. I don’t want you to worry. I’ll take care of you. I love you, Paula, and I know that your father will return soon, regretting what he has done.”

But it was years before I saw him again. Ten years later, Nicolás drove to his mother’s house. The place seemed abandoned. The garden was covered with weeds and the windows were closed.
Nicolás knocked on his mother’s neighbor’s door. The woman was surprised to see him and was reluctant to give her her daughter’s address. He looked at his tary clothes and looked at his old rusty car.
“Paula got married and Doris lives with her. Don’t expect them to welcome you they gave you to the prodigal son,” he said coldly. She was her mother’s best friend. “After what you did to them, I would expect the worst if it were you.”
Nicolás didn’t even answer. He simply turned his back on him and walked away. He wasn’t worried, he knew how to handle his mother… When he reached the address, he was stunned. His daughter and mother lived in a huge and luxurious mansion!

He walked to the door and rang the bell. “I want to talk to Doris or Paula Durán, please,” he told the uniformed maid who opened the door.
“You refer to Mrs. Durán and Mrs. Hidalgo, sir,” the maid corrected him with a contemptuous smile, and led him to a huge and elegant living room.

A few minutes later, Paula came in. She looked at him silently and without any trace of surprise, and Nicolás knew that the nosy neighbor had called to warn them that she was coming.
“Paula, my baby…”, he said and took a step forward to hug the beautiful woman his daughter had become. She turned away.
“What do you want, father?” he asked without a trace of anger in his voice.
“I wanted to see you and my mother, honey,” Nicolás said with his best smile. “I’ve missed them a lot…”.
At that moment, Doris entered. She also looked calm, and very preserved. “Nicolás,” he said with slight indifference. “What are you doing here?”
Nicolás blushed. “I wanted to see my family,” he said in a choppy voice. “I was expecting a warm welcome!”
“You abandoned me, father,” Paula said coldly. “Did you expect warmth?”
Nicolás looked at his mother, waiting for her support. “It wasn’t me… Diana… she insisted. He said he would leave me…”.

“Wow!” exclaimed Doris, letting her discomfort shine through. “You’re here alone. Does that mean that the money ran out and that Diana still abandoned you?”
Nicolás did not take it for granted. He looked around the beautiful room with envy. “I see that they have done very well!” he said bitterly. “Maybe you can help me with something… I’m unemployed and I have nowhere to go…”.
“I’m surprised you have the nerve to ask us for something, father,” Paula said. “You left us when we needed you most, but we managed to get ahead. And yes, now we live well, and not thanks to you.”
“I’m still your father,” Nicolás said, indignant.
“You are nobody to me,” he said. Then he approached his grandmother, who looked at Nicolás with a hint of sadness in her eyes. “But for the sake of Grandma Doris, I will help you.”
Paula approached a delicate desk Louis XV and opened the drawer. He took out a set of keys from his old house and put some money in an envelope. “These are the keys to the old house.”
“There are 5 thousand dollars in this envelope. You won’t get another penny, so don’t bother coming back.”
Paula put her arm around Grandma Doris’ shoulders and led her out of the room. In a matter of seconds, the maid was there to escort Nicolás to the door.

Nicolás sat in his car for a long time looking at his daughter’s extensive property. “I did what I had to do,” he complained. “That’s the only way I could be happy and they had each other. Why do they treat me like that? They are very unfair!”
What can we learn from this story?
Selfish people can’t see the needs of others. Nicolás didn’t think twice before leaving his family, to fully enjoy his life.
What you give is what you get. Nicolás hoped to share his daughter’s prosperity after ten years of abandonment and was very surprised to feel her coldness. However, they were more generous with him than he had been with them, and allowed him to live in his old house.
