A Man Is Accused of Being the Father of a Baby Left on His Doorstep—and It Costs Him His Marriage and Changes His Life

Kyle Greenbecker had spent a year working on an oil pipeline in Alaska, but he was finally coming home to his beautiful wife. He and Lisa had met in high school, and Kyle had never regretted marrying her at nineteen.
Maybe he was old-fashioned, but Kyle was proud that Lisa was the only woman he’d ever been intimate with. He didn’t need or want anyone else. It never crossed his mind that Lisa would doubt him—and for good reason.

When his plane landed, Kyle grabbed his luggage and exited with the other passengers, scanning the crowd for Lisa’s familiar face—but she wasn’t there to pick him up.
Probably, Kyle thought, she got held up at work with an emergency. He quickly texted her to say he was on his way home but got no response. He hopped into an Uber, and an hour later, he was walking up to their front door.
The living room lights were on, but Lisa wasn’t there. He headed into the kitchen and stopped in the doorway, stunned. On the kitchen table sat a bassinet, and Kyle could see a tiny arm waving aimlessly.
He stepped closer. There was a baby in the bassinet—on the table in his kitchen! The child looked at Kyle with the wide-eyed wonder only babies possess, and Kyle stared back just as bewildered.
Then he saw a folded piece of paper next to the bassinet. He picked it up and unfolded it. Inside was another sheet with a message written in handwriting he didn’t recognize:
“You’ve had your fun, now take responsibility for your daughter.”
Meanwhile, the note addressed to him in Lisa’s elegant handwriting read:

Kyle,
Yesterday, I found this baby at our doorstep with that note attached. I always suspected you were cheating during your work trips, but I didn’t hold it against you—after all, I had plenty of affairs while you were away.
But saddling me with someone else’s child is too much.
I’ve filed for divorce, and I sincerely hope I never see you again.
P.S. Don’t worry about the baby—I only left when I saw you walking up the drive.
Enjoy your life, Kyle. I certainly plan to enjoy mine.

Kyle sat down and dropped his head into his hands. He couldn’t believe this was happening. This child wasn’t his. He had never cheated on Lisa—never! A soft cooing made him look up.
The baby was waving her tiny hand in the air, so Kyle offered his finger—and to his surprise, the baby gripped it tightly.
“Well, baby girl,” Kyle said. “Looks like it’s just you and me, and I have no idea what to do with you!”
The baby cooed again, then twisted her face in an alarming way and turned bright red.
“Oh God!” Kyle cried. “What’s happening?”
A certain smell quickly answered his question.

Yep—diaper time. But did he even have a diaper? On the floor beside the table was a large backpack with several snap pockets he didn’t recognize. Kyle opened it to find a confusing variety of items—and diapers.
He quickly Googled how to change a diaper and watched closely as a woman on YouTube demonstrated on a doll.
Kyle followed her instructions, but things didn’t go as smoothly. The doll didn’t kick its legs or plant its heels into the foul, unnameable contents of the dirty diaper. After cleaning the baby, Kyle realized she was a girl—and he knew nothing about girls!
“I’m not gonna give you dating advice,” he said solemnly to the baby. “But I can teach you how to ride a bike.”
At that moment, Kyle realized he intended to keep the baby.

He picked up the freshly changed baby and said, “You need me, and I guess I need you too. What do you think, sweetheart?”
Kyle consulted YouTube’s baby expert again to learn how to prepare formula, then cradled the baby in his arm to feed her.
“You need a name, you know that? How about… Celeste? Do you like it? Or maybe Lily…”
If someone had told Kyle he’d adapt to fatherhood so quickly and smoothly, he would’ve never believed them. Lily had her moments and tantrums, but somehow, it all worked out.
Kyle officially registered Lily as his daughter and enrolled her in daycare. For him, her birthday would always be the day he found her.
But it was on Lily’s second birthday that Kyle’s world came crashing down.

A woman knocked on his door. “I’ve come for my baby,” she said. Kyle just stared at her. She was tall, blonde, and thin, with huge breasts that were clearly the work of a plastic surgeon.
“My what?” Kyle asked.
A real father is the one who loves and cherishes his child.
“My baby,” she snapped. “I left her here two years ago. I’m sorry, I was a bit high and my boyfriend lives on the next block and I got mixed up. You know how it is.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t know how that is because I’ve never abandoned a child on anyone’s doorstep,” Kyle replied coldly. “If I were you, I’d leave before I call the police.”

“Now look here,” the woman said sharply. “I figured I’d made a mistake a week later when Burt didn’t answer my calls, but now I need that little girl!”
“You need her?” Kyle asked angrily. “What do you need her for?”
“Burt just landed a contract in the Major Leagues,” the woman said. “And that baby is going to make sure some of those millions end up in my bank account!”
Kyle kicked the woman out, but he had a feeling he hadn’t seen the last of her. And he was right. A week later, he was summoned to family court. A woman named Cherish Vegas was contesting his adoption of little Lily.

Suddenly, Kyle was being bombarded with court orders, visited by Social Services at all hours of the day and night, and his friends and coworkers were being questioned. Cherish was determined to get her hands on that money!
Finally, the day of the hearing arrived. Kyle nervously handed Lily to the social worker for the duration of the hearing and stepped into the courtroom. Cherish was there, of course, and a tall man with Lily’s blue eyes was sitting on her side of the courtroom. It had to be the famous Burt!
Cherish cried and whimpered and told the judge how much she loved and missed her baby, and how her wild college days (now over and deeply regretted) had led her to place Lily in Kyle’s care.
The judge looked at the documents in front of her. “By placing her in his care, you mean leaving her on his porch, correct, Miss Vegas?” the judge asked.

Cherish blushed. “Well, I’m still her mother! No one can deny that!” she yelled.
The judge looked at Burt. “You, sir, are you the father?”
Burt stood up unsteadily and said, “I suppose I must be…”
The judge looked at him sharply. “Are you prepared and capable of assuming parental responsibilities for this child?”
Cherish shouted, “Of course he is, Your Honor, he just signed a three-million-dollar contract to play ball…”

“Oh!” the judge exclaimed. “Now the truth comes out! Tell me, Miss Vegas, what name did you give your daughter?”
“Name?” Cherish asked, confused. “Well, she’ll take her father’s last name, since he’ll be paying child support!”
Kyle stood up. “Your Honor,” he said. “May I address the court?”
“Yes, Mr. Greenbecker,” said the judge. “Please do.”

“Your Honor, my daughter’s name is Lily, and she carries her father’s last name—mine. From the moment that child came into my life, I have loved her, and she loves me.”
At that moment, Lily, who had been playing with the social worker’s necklace, noticed Kyle standing. “Daddy!” she shouted and held out her arms.
“Well, ladies and gentlemen, I believe the key witness has spoken,” said the judge. “I hereby dismiss all custody claims made by Miss Vegas and uphold Kyle Greenbecker’s custody and adoption of Lily Greenbecker.”
That night, Kyle celebrated his court victory, and he and Lily spent the evening chasing fireflies in the yard. “Stars!” Lily shouted. But for Kyle, the brightest star of all was his little girl.

What can we learn from this story?
• A real father is someone who loves and cherishes their child. Kyle cared for Lily and always loved her as his own.
• A heartless woman will use anyone—even her own child—for profit. Cherish didn’t love Lily; she just wanted Burt’s money.
