I have always believed that life has a way of balancing things. Of course, life has thrown heavy things at me, but somehow, things always balance. I’m Bree and I’m 20 years old. Looking back, I’ve been through a lot, but I’ve also been blessed with some amazing people.

Growing up, I was the apple of my parents’ eye. As an only child, I received all the love and attention you can imagine. My parents made sure I had the best of everything: the best schools, the most amazing birthday parties and friends who were like an extended family.

Every night, my father wrapped me up and told me stories of his childhood adventures, and my mother would not let a day go by without telling me how much it meant to them.

But when I turned ten, my whole world turned upside down. I remember that day as if it were yesterday. My parents were going to a family reunion in another city and I stayed with my grandmother. They hugged me tighter than usual before leaving.

That same afternoon, while playing checkers with grandma, we received the devastating news of a horrible accident. A truck had lost control and crashed into my parents’ car on the highway. They didn’t survive.

Losing them was like losing a part of myself. But grandma and grandpa occupied the voids left by my parents. They never let me feel alone.

Grandma read me stories every night that made the corners of the world seem closer. Grandpa took me to amusement parks, pushing me on the swings higher and higher, as if he could get away from my sorrows.

His gifts were always so attentive! But nothing compared to his love and warmth. I appreciated those moments, those simple and quiet days with them. They were my strength, they protected me from feeling all the weight of my parents’ absence. With the grandparents by my side, life felt complete again, even with its scars.

Life, huh? Just when you think you’re stable, he throws you another curved ball. A few years ago, just when I was starting to adapt to the rhythm of life with my grandparents, we faced another storm: grandfather died.

It affected us a lot. For me, it was like losing one of my parents again, and for grandma, I can’t even imagine the pain of losing her life partner.

Despite her pain, the grandmother was incredible. He remained my rock, never letting his pain diminish the warmth and love he lavished on me. His strength was something else. He brought us together even more.

We were more than a granddaughter and a grandmother; we were a team, a small family of our own that clung to each other despite everything.

Honestly, grandma is the most beloved person in my life. I implicitly trust in his judgment; after all, I am who I am today thanks to his love and guidance.

And then there’s Noah. We met at an art exhibition a year ago. Do you know those moments when you just get along with someone? That was ours. From that day on, it was as if we had known each other all our lives.

Noah is 23 years old, a couple older than me, and he is simply… wonderful. He has such a genuine goodness that it makes you want to be better just for being close to him.

He is sweet, affectionate and attentive, and we share many interests. With him, it seems that maybe, just maybe, the “happy forever” are not just fairy tales.

When things with Noah got serious, I knew I had to meet grandma, the most important person in my life. I really hoped that she would see in him the same as I did, and maybe, just maybe, she would give us her blessing. But life has a curious way of throwing curved balls.

I expected a smile or a curious question the first time I told Grandma about Noah, but his reaction caught me totally off guard. He flatly opposed it. He told me that I was too young and that it was too early to think about serious relationships.

Grandma, with all the love of her voice, advised me: “Focus on your studies, honey. Your future can’t wait. You have a lifetime ahead of you for matters of the heart.”

It hurt me, I’m not going to lie. But to to hit the grandmother or to make her angry? I couldn’t stand it. So I sled back when talking about Noah near her. I kept meeting him and sending him heart emojis and all that, but when I was with grandma, I was the studious granddaughter she wanted me to focus on being.

Noah’s reaction to grandma’s concerns could have been very different, but she only showed her true face. He didn’t get angry or felt belittled. Instead, he hugged me and said, “She only wants the best for you, Bree. Nothing happens. We’ll take things easy, without haste.”

Hearing him say that, and seeing that he understood it without a gint of resentment, made me fall in love with him even more. It wasn’t just about us, but also about respecting my family’s wishes. Noah understood, and that meant a lot to me.

University life, huh? He really knows how to test yourself. Among all the projects and endless tasks, I had to move to a residence outside the campus to keep up.

With everything I had on me, catching up with Noah or visiting grandma became something strange: most of our chats were reduced to text messages and FaceTime from time to time, when we could.

Imagine my surprise when I finally had some free time, I went to see grandma and saw something incredible.

There he was, getting into a car with Noah. My Noah. Where the hell could they go together without me knowing? Stung by curiosity and with a beating heart, I decided to follow them.

I followed the car at a safe distance, my heart twisting at every turn. They stopped in front of a picturesque restaurant that I had heard of but had never visited. What happened next seemed to me to be taken out of a movie to feel good.

Noah got out, walked next to him and opened the door to his grandmother, as always. He took her hand, helped her get out of the car and they entered the restaurant together, chatting and laughing.

When I looked out the window, I saw them laughing and chatting while they took a table. Seeing grandma really laugh, something I hadn’t seen in a long time, warmed my heart. They seemed so comfortable, so happy in each other’s company.

At that moment, all my fears and doubts disappeared. Noah was not only special to me; he was special to the most important person in my life. I couldn’t have asked for a more comforting vision.

I stayed there for a few more minutes, watching them. I felt like the luckiest person on the planet and I realized how lucky I was to have someone like Noah. Not only in my corner, but also in grandma’s.

That weekend, with my heart still full of what I had witnessed, I told Noah about it. I had to know more about what was going on. What he said next not only surprised me, but a wave of emotion invaded me.

“You know, Bree, it started as a surprise visit to your grandmother,” Noah began, with a soft voice that reflected the warmth of his actions. “I thought it would be good to see her, maybe keep her company for a while.”

Noah explained how that day became something more when he realized that the lawn had to be mowed and offered to help. “Grandma and I get along, you know? And she mentioned how your grandfather used to take her for a walk every Thursday, rain or sun.”

And that was what Noah had been doing. Every Thursday afternoon, he took his grandmother to eat in secret. They started with any task she needed at home and then went to her favorite restaurant. He always insisted on paying, respecting the tradition that my grandmother had shared with her husband.

“She chooses the place, always. We talk about everything: his favorite TV shows, his old travel stories, and sometimes my family too,” Noah continued, his eyes lit up at every word.

I managed to capture one of those exits with the mobile, the way I gently guided her to the restaurant, the way they laughed and chatted like old friends. It was too much. Tears began to run down my face when I realized the depth of their relationship.

“This is what your grandfather did, Bree. I just wanted to keep a part of that alive for her,” Noah said, extending his hand to squeeze mine.

I looked at that incredible man who had not only captured my heart, but had perfectly interwoven in the fabric of my family. I thought of how grandma’s face lit up with joy, a vision she appreciated more than anything.

“And do you know what he told me last Thursday?” Noah’s voice took me out of my thoughts. “She told me that she hadn’t been so happy since before her grandfather died. She told me that she is very happy that you have found someone who loves you as much as he loves the people you love.”

It was a moment of pure emotion, when I realized how much love and how much reflection Noah had dedicated to creating that bond with his grandmother. It wasn’t just about being a good boyfriend; now he was family.

Sitting there, with tears drying on my cheeks, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by gratitude. I hugged Noah, without words to express the enormity of my gratitude. “Thank you,” was all I could whisper, but it contained the weight of all unexpressed emotion.

It’s true what they say about unexpected blessings. I had found mine in the connection between the two most important people in my life. And yes, it was more than sweet. It was everything.

So there you have it. Two people, from different generations, who find friendship by sharing meals and memories. Isn’t life sometimes wonderfully surprising? I’m very grateful. I love these two human beings more than words can express.

What do you think? Isn’t your friendship the sweetest?
