Son sees his elderly mother’s will and then orders him to pack his things immediately – Story of the day

A son accidentally discovers his mother’s will and what he reads in it makes him tell her to pack his bags immediately and get ready to leave his house.

Gerardo Núñez looked at the text on his screen with amazement, then picked up the phone. “Helena,” he said dryly to his assistant. “Get me my lawyer on the phone, then Margarita Praga, then my mother, in that order!”

Helena had been Gerardo’s personal assistant for ten years and knew that he was not a particularly patient man, so she immediately began calling his lawyer.

In his office, Gerardo was looking at the screen and shaking his head in disbelief. He decided that I would pay him with the same coin!

Finally, Helena managed to contact the lawyer and communicated it. “Sam,” Gerardo said dryly. “Old man, I just wanted to warn you that you made a mistake! You sent me my mother’s will for her approval instead of sending it to her.”

On the other side of the line, the lawyer babbled his apologies, but Gerardo had said what he wanted to say, so he quickly said goodbye and hung up.

He sat looking through his huge floor-to-ceiling window at the snowy skyline of the city until the phone rang again.

This time it was Margarita Prague. Gerardo described his requirements succinctly and told him: “I want it for today.” He heard her object on the other side of the line and then intervened.

“If you can’t solve it, I’ll go with someone who can.” The answer on the other side of the line made him smile darkly. “This afternoon then, at 5:00 p.m.,” he said and hung up.

He picked up the internal phone. “Helena, you can contact my mother now,” he said. In a matter of seconds, the efficient Helena had Mrs. Edith Núñez in line.

“Mother!” said Gerardo. “I have two things to tell you. First of all, Samuel Rivero sent me your new will by mistake… and the second thing is that I want you to pack your bags immediately.”

Sitting in the living room of Gerardo’s beautiful house where she lived with him, Edith was speechless. “Gerardo… Are you upset about the will? Please let me explain.”

“I don’t need your explanations, mother. I need you to pack your bags and be ready to leave at 4:00 p.m.,” Gerardo said, and hung up. Edith sat there with her heart beating hard. She had thought that her son would understand her!

He was the youngest of her three children, and the one who had always supported her. He helped her overcome life’s difficulties, and when arthritis threatened to cripple her this last year, even though she was only 62 years old, he took her home to live with him.

Edith went up to her room and packed her bags. Yes, he had left all his money to his two older children, but he honestly thought Gerardo would understand. Edith stared at her suitcase with tears clouding her vision.

He had hurt his most beloved and kind son! I had to explain to him! Edith called Gerardo’s housekeeper to help her with her suitcase and went downstairs to wait anxiously for him.

At 4:00 p.m. I was there, punctual as always. He entered, gave him a brief kiss on the cheek and Edith begged: “Please, Gerardo. Let me explain!”

“I don’t have time for explanations, mother. Come,” he said. “Everything is fixed.” He took Edith’s bag, took it to his car and put it in the trunk. She got into the car without saying a word.

Gerardo drove in silence. “Where are we going, son?” Edith asked, but he chose that exact moment to turn on the radio and did not answer her. The distressed woman looked around. I’ve never been to this part of the city before…

“Listen, Gerardo, about the will…”, Edith began to say bravely.

“Oh, the will!” Gerardo said, looking at his mother and frowning. “The one where you leave your house and $120,000 in savings to divide between Ana and Oliver, and I get the old cabin by the lake and the photos of the war grandfather, and dad’s watch?”

“Yes…”, Edith whispered. “You’ll see…”, at that moment Gerardo stopped the car. They had arrived at what seemed to be a small private airport, and an elegant private jet was waiting for them.

Gerardo turned to Edith, who had tears in her eyes. “Oh, mom, I understand about the house and the money. Ana and Oliver are fighting and I have more money than I could spend.

“But what you are leaving me, shows me how well you understand me. You know exactly what is important to me and what is close to my heart. I have all the money I need, but the memories you are giving me are precious!”

“But Gerardo…”, Edith gasped. “I thought you were going to kick me out!”

Gerardo smiled. “You’re not so lucky! I’ll take you to Tahiti for two weeks. I think it would do your arthritis a lot of good, and I could use some quality time with my mom!”

Edith hugged her youngest son, who was secretly her favorite son, with tears in her eyes. I had understood! She knew that her father’s memories would be appreciated and valued with love by Gerardo.

The two spent a lovely time in Tahiti; Gerardo tanned and even met a lovely girl who was also on vacation and it seemed to Edith that maybe she wouldn’t have to wait too long for those grandchildren.

What can we learn from this story?

Don’t judge people’s intentions by your own fears. Edith feared that her son would get angry about her will, so she concluded that he was kicking her out.
The true value of things is the one that the heart gives it, not its monetary value. For Gerald, the photos, the watch and the old cabin were more valuable than millions of dollars.
