The woman who approached me was about thirty years old and wore a designer suit that screamed wealth. But his expression was anything but pleasant. Her husband, high and broad shoulders, walked slightly behind her with an air of arrogance that matched her behavior.
They stopped next to me and the woman’s eyes were fixed on my seat. Without even greeting me politely and without ceasing to exude rights, he rudely demanded: “You have to exchange seats with me. I have the wrong seat and I refuse to sit away from my husband.”

I blinked, surprised by his tone. He spoke as if his mistake was somehow MY problem that he had to solve. I took a look at his boarding pass, which confirmed my suspicions. It was a center seat in row 12, not even near the premium seat I had chosen!
As I did not agree immediately, the woman rolled her eyes dramatically.
“Come on, it’s just a seat. YOU don’t need all that space,” he mocked contemptuously at my hesitation, with a tone that distilled condescension.

Her husband, standing behind her with his arms crossed, smiled with satisfaction and added: “Yes, be reasonable. We have to sit together, and you don’t need to be up here, do you?”
The audacity of his request left me momentarily speechless. They were clearly arrogant and hadn’t even bothered to kindly ask me. They took it for granted that he would give in to his demands. He felt the eyes of the other passengers fixed on us, some curious, others compassionate.
I took a deep breath, weighing my options. I didn’t want to face a confrontation, and even less at the beginning of a six-hour flight.

“Okay,” I said with all the calm I could gather. I got up and gave him my boarding pass while trying to hide my irritation. “Enjoy the seat,” I said unintentionally.
