It’s very rare to hear stories like this, as we often get accustomed to the way our lives unfold, and as we age, we sometimes forget to truly live, to pursue our dreams, considering them impossible to achieve. The story of this grandmother has circled the globe. Joy is a woman who spent her life at home, always curious but never traveled. Two of her children left early, as did her husband. She spent the last 20 years at home until joined by her grandson Brad, and together, they’ve traversed mountains, highways, seen the ocean, and continue to accumulate kilometers and travel adventures.

Joy began her travels at the age of 85, always desiring to but resources held her back. It all started when her grandson shared stories of his experiences crossing the Appalachian Trail, and she confessed she had never seen the sea or the mountains. Touched by his grandmother’s revelations, Brad decided he would fulfill her dream, and that’s where their adventure began, lasting for over 6 years. “My grandmother was 85, living completely alone in her house, in that old little house where my brothers and I grew up.”

She had been through a lot, some very sad moments, and I feel that life uses me as an instrument so she can leave in peace and happy to have fulfilled her dream of traveling and seeing the world. She worked until she was 80, earning a barely sufficient minimum wage to live decently, so there wasn’t much money to undertake our adventure. “After this first trip in 2015, Brad decided to open a fundraising page to make his grandmother’s dream come true. To his surprise, hundreds of people were moved by this story, and within a few months, he had enough money to start their adventure together. Since that trip, they have visited even more.”

They continue to travel continuously, sharing their adventures with others to inspire them to travel. At 91, Joy is enjoying life more than ever, feeling that she has been given a second chance to admire the world. “This trip has been a unique experience for both of us. My grandmother lives every day knowing that it might be the first and last time she visits these places. She takes her time to appreciate the beauty around us, and undoubtedly, it has drastically changed my life.” Traveling gives us a new perspective, fills us with experiences, and above all, allows us to discover who we are.
In 2021, the young man and his 91-year-old grandmother had already visited 53 of the 63 U.S. national parks. They only have 10 left to do, and they hope to get closer to that goal. Brad became a wildlife veterinarian, documenting the adventure with his grandmother on social media, where he shares incredible photos of both of them and Joy, happy and full of vitality. Brad admits that traveling with Joy has brought them closer and taught him many things, such as patience and enjoying life at a slower yet more interesting pace. The young man has created wonderful memories with his grandmother, and it comforts him to know that when she is gone, he will return to the places they visited together and can connect with her and feel her presence.
