Vito, a senior canine, dedicated 13 years in pursuit of his ideal adoptive, and has recently found his perfect mate. As 2024 concludes, Best Friends Animal Society is commemorating the many rescue creatures, like senior dog Vito, who have been adopted this year.
The animal welfare organisation aims to eliminate the euthanasia of dogs and cats in American shelters, aspiring to achieve a no-kill status by the conclusion of 2025. Best Friends reports that the euthanasia rate of animals in U.S. shelters has declined by 3.4% since 2023; nevertheless, several creatures still need homes before the nation’s shelter system achieves no-kill status.
Vito’s odyssey started with his entry into the shelter system as a puppy, where he resided for many years until relocating to Best Friends’ animal refuge in Kanab, Utah. The shelter committed to provide lifelong care for Vito, irrespective of his adoption status. The dog resided at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary for 10 years, unable to get a suitable home due to biting behaviours that need a patient and experienced owner. Vito was destined to remain in the refuge until Casey Black visited the rescue in March on a trip to Utah.
I often travel, and during the spring, I visited Texas and subsequently drove around Kanab, where I saw a billboard for the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Black tells PEOPLE, “I considered, ‘I will investigate that location.’” Following his first visit, Black started helping at the refuge, prompting him to consider the canines available for adoption. He saw Vito and felt an attraction to the puppy due to its resemblance to one of Black’s former canines. The sanctuary informed Black about Vito’s aggressive biting tendencies and indicated that the dog needed a seasoned owner. Black has the precise background that Best Friends sought, having established the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre in Golden, British Columbia. Black was employed at the centre for many years before to transitioning to other areas of conservation. Through his interactions with wolves, Black acquired insight into canine body language and the patience required to earn Vito’s confidence. Black conferred with Vito several times at the refuge and hosted the dog for several overnight stays, including camping excursions, prior to the adoption. “I ventured into the desert to camp alone; there were no other individuals present,” Black remarks on their nightly excursions. “He remained near and listened attentively, yet harboured significant trust issues.” Following more successful sleepovers, Black formally acquired the dog in March and has maintained the development of a trusting bond with Vito. “It likely required more than two months before I could genuinely stroke his back,” Black states. Currently, Vito and Black have a profound and empathetic connection. They like extended excursions in the outdoors together. While the duo is now in Alberta, they often go in Black’s van to picturesque locations around North America. “Initially, when I acquired Vito, he would merely position himself at the front of the passenger seat with his head in the corner,” Black recounts of his early experiences with the dog. “He has indeed improved and is now in better condition and stronger than when I acquired him,” he continues
. “He enjoys taking walks, and his joyful demeanour is evident in his energetic hops.” It is rather amusing to observe. Although others may see that Black transformed Vito’s life, the guy asserts that the true hero is the dog. “I adore this canine.” He has really influenced me. He is my closest companion. He is my companion. He accompanies me everywhere and remains closely attached, since I am certain he shares my sentiments,” he states, adding, “He is just an exceptional dog. I regret not having obtained him sooner. Many others find it hard to comprehend that he is 13 years old.
