My new neighbors invited me to their house, but the only thing I found was an abandoned child with a heartbreaking note – Story of the day

My new neighbors looked weird from the start. Her little daughter played alone, and I ended up spending half the day with her until her mother finally appeared. As a courtesy, he invited me to his house. The next day, I found the abandoned girl with a heartbreaking note. I decided to act immediately.

It was a typical quiet day in our small suburban neighborhood when I saw the moving truck approaching the old house next door. The place had been abandoned for years, and seeing some activity there was already quite surprising.

I stood by the window, looking through the curtains like a curious cat.

“Who are they?” I muttered to myself, trying to make sense of what I saw.

The man was tall, with sharp features that made him look like he came out of a film noir.

But the woman who was with him was something else. Pale, almost ghostly, with a distant look, as if she were there, but not really.

And then there was the girl.

I wouldn’t be more than four years old. She was tiny, with big eyes full of innocence, clinging to a worn teddy bear as if he were her only friend in the world.

She played alone in the undergrowth-covered courtyard, and her small figure looked even smaller between the wild grass and the tangled undergrowth.

Samuel and I had always dreamed of having children. However, after years of trying, it was painfully clear that it was not going to be possible for us.

Samuel never talked much about it, he always ignored it by shrugging his shoulders or quickly changing the subject.

And me? I couldn’t forget the dream. And to see that girl, so alone… I was removing something deep inside me.

A few days later, I went out for my usual walk around the neighborhood. When you turned the corner, there was the girl from the neighbor’s house. This time it was dangerously close to the street.

“Hello, honey,” I shouted softly, approaching in a hurry. “Don’t play so close to the road, okay?”

He looked at me with big and innocent eyes and, for a moment, I stood there, taking his little hand.

I took her back to her house and knocked on the door. No one answered. My hand wavered on the knob.

I took a deep breath and opened it, just a slitch.

The house was almost empty, just a few old furniture and scattered boxes. It was as if they had moved but not settled in. There was no one inside.

“What’s your name, honey?” I asked, crouching at the height of the girl.

“Lily,” he replied, with a soft voice like a whisper.

“Well, Lily,” I told her, “what do you think if we do some drawings?”

“I don’t have colored pencils.”

Those words made a hole in my heart.

“Very good! Let’s use a stick and sand from outside.” I tried to cheer her up.

He nodded enthusiastically and I began to draw simple shapes with a wooden stick: a heart, a star and the letter “A”. Lily watched me carefully, and her eyes widened with each movement of the stick.

“Can I try?” he asked, picking up a stick.

“Of course,” I gave it to him. “Why don’t you try to write your name?”

He carefully drew a trembling “L” on the ground, and then looked at me for approval.

“Great, Lily! You’re doing very well,” I encouraged her.

After a while, we moved on to another game. I pointed to some stones that were nearby.

“Let’s build something together. How about a castle?”

We put the stones together and stack them on top of each other. It was actually a simple structure, but Lily thought it was the greatest thing in the world.

“Look, it’s like a tower,” he said, carefully placing a pebble on top.

“It is. And here you have another one for the other side,” I added, handing him a flat stone. “You know, the princess could live here.”

Lily’s face lit up even more at the idea.

“And the prince can live here,” he said, pointing to a place on the other side.

I realized how focused Lily was on the task, as if each stone was a precious gem. It made me wonder if I had ever played with real toys.

“Thank you for playing with me.”

His words filled my heart.

When the sun began to set, I began to worry about what to do.

The girl’s mother finally appeared, almost out of nowhere. She seemed surprised to see me, but she didn’t show much emotion.

“Thank you,” he said flatly, the girl approaching. “I was close the whole time.”

There was no warmth or smile, just those words. Before leaving, he added,

“Why don’t you come tomorrow for tea?”

It wasn’t so much an invitation as an obligation. But I nodded my head.

I looked at Lily. She had been so engaged, so full of life while we were playing, but as soon as her mother appeared, something in her seemed to change.

Without saying a word, Lily approached her mother and her little hand slipped into the woman’s cold squeeze. He didn’t protest or hesitate, he just obeyed in silence.

Lily looked at me again. “Will you come and play with me again?”

“Of course, honey,” I replied, my voice choppy in my throat.

As I watched them disappear along the path, a feeling of restlessness invaded me. That sadness in Lily’s eyes was like a silent plea, a cry for help that she couldn’t express.

There was something strange in that family, something I couldn’t identify.

The next day I hesitated, looking at the shacked paint on the neighbors’ door, and then I called. They didn’t answer. I called again, this time louder, but there was still no answer.

“Hello? It’s me, the neighbor next door,” I shouted, hoping to hear some sign of life inside.

Nothing. The house remained disturbingly silent and silence oppressed me like a weight. After what seemed like an eternity, I hesitantly pushed the door and entered.

My footsteps sounded loudly against the wooden floor as I walked through the rooms, each one emptier than the last.

Then, in the living room, I found Lily. I was sitting on the floor with a package of cookies and a bottle of water. He held a piece of paper between his little hands.

“Lily?” I whispered, kneeling next to her.

He didn’t say anything, he just gave me the note. I unfolded the paper and the heartbreaking message it contained gave me a chill:

“It’s yours if you want it. We know that you will take good care of her.”

I stared at the words, with my mind run as a wild.

Who would do something like that? Abandoning his daughter like this, leaving her in an empty house with nothing but a note?

I began to feel panic in my chest and grabbed Lily, pulling her.

“We have to go,” I whispered, picking her up.

As I headed for the door, a terrifying thought crossed my mind.

I stood still for a moment, with my heart beating hard. But then I looked at Lily. I couldn’t leave her there, no matter the risks.

When we arrived at my house, Samuel was already at home. He looked up from the sofa when he came in.

“What happened?” he asked.

I carefully left Lily on the floor and gave her a box of cookies and a glass of milk.

“Here, honey, why don’t you have a snack and watch some cartoons?” I said, turning on the TV to distract her.

Once installed, I turned to Samuel, who was now standing, with an angry face.

“Why is there a girl in our house, Eliza?” he raised his voice.

“Samuel, I found her alone,” I began, with a trembling voice. “In that empty house, with nothing but this note.”

I gave him the paper. He read the note quickly and then looked at me.

“You broke our agreement, Eliza. We agreed that there would be no children in this house.”

“Samuel, I couldn’t leave her there! She was alone, with no one to take care of her,” I begged him, trying to make him understand.

“I told you I didn’t want to have children! And now you have brought a girl to our house? Do you realize what you have done?”

His words penetrated deep, like a knife twisting in my chest.

“You never said that! All these years you have said that it was for your health…”.

He looked away, his jaw clenched.

“I Lied. I never wanted to have children, Elisa. I just didn’t want to lose you.”

I felt as if the floor had been torn from under my feet. All those years, all those hopes and dreams… He had been living a lie.

Samuel gave me his ultimatum:

“Either you take it again, or they both leave.”

I stared at him, at the man I had loved and trusted, and I realized that I could not stay. Not like that. Not with him.

Without saying anything else, I walked away from him, picking up some belongings. I prepared a small bag, trying to contain the tears that threatened to spill.

I couldn’t abandon Lily after all because of what had already happened.

When I took Lily by the hand and took her to the door, Samuel didn’t stop me. He just stayed there, cold and distant, as if we were strangers.

I had no idea where we were going.

Finally, we ended up at the school where I work and spent the night in my office. I knew it wasn’t a permanent solution, but it was a start.

In the following days, I started the adoption process of Lily, but it was not easy. The authorities insisted that he needed a stable home.

Then, unexpectedly, I was informed that Lily’s biological parents had left her an inheritance: the house. So I could adopt Lily and move there.

Shocked, I indired more and discovered that Lily’s adoptive parents – my neighbors – had adopted Lily only for that inheritance. But when they realized that they couldn’t take care of her, they decided that she deserved something better.

To make sure that she would not end up in another home for the wrong reasons, they left her and the house in my care. We moved the same day, and the house became our home, full of warmth and love.

Lily opened up little by little, and every time she called me “mom”, my heart swelled.

Samuel, who lived alone, began to reconsider his decisions. He started helping at home and taking care of Lily when I was busy. Forgiving him was not easy, but his efforts made me feel that maybe we could find our way back to each other.
